WHY DO WE NEED TO TAKE VITAMINS AND MINERALS?

Last week, I was invited to give a talk to the Butterfly course at StudioBelle last sharing some basic information about vitamins and minerals and when you might need them. I’m sharing some of the highlights below in the hope it helps you understand when and why you might need a nutritional top-up.

WHY AND WHEN TO USE THEM

Supplements – they literally supplement and complement your life style. Use them as a top-up to help maintain optimum vitamin and mineral levels.

BUT WHY WOULD YOU NEED A TOP UP?

Always times when our body needs a helping hand. Whether it be knowing there are lots of germs flying around and reaching for the Vitamin C and Echinacea, or knowing that you’re juggling multiple things and need an energy boost with some vitamin B.

Mineral and vitamin levels in foods have decreased over the years hence rise in organic farming. Selenium for example is a mineral previously abundant but now virtually untraceable in soil used to grow your vegetables.

Eating a healthy rainbow diet full of protein, fruit and vegetables is a great way to kick start your health. Increasing your water intake (yes I know you must hear it all the time but as our body is made up of 70% water it is rather vital!) is a great way of maintain healthy cells.

Fun fact: did you know that you can survive for a few weeks without food but only a few days without water?

ARE THEY ALL THE SAME?

Unfortunately not – that would make life too easy!

To ensure you get the maximum benefit and cost efficiency, try to look for the purest form available, ideally in a food soluble variety to allow maximum absorption. This may mean a change from your traditional high street brands but I am confident you will see a difference.

I recommend 5 high quality companies:

Neals Yard     Cytoplan       Nutri Advanced     Metabolics       BioCare

WATCH OUT FOR:

There are some ‘fillers’ that are best to watch out for:

  • Bulking agents – to top up the content of the pills or capsules
  • Binders – used to stick ingredients together in a tablet
  • Anti-caking agents – to stop the ingredients clogging up machines
  • Carriers – to maintain a powder consistency
  • Coatings – to make swallowing easy
  • Preservatives – to save ingredients from spoiling
  • Emulsifiers – to bind water to fats
  • Colours – to look more appealing to the consumer
  • Flavours – to alter the taste, even in tablets that are swallowed whole
  • Sweeteners – to add flavour. Look for words ending in -“ose”

SO WHAT I SHOULD USE FOR HOW I AM FEELING?

Below is a little list I’ve created to give you an idea of the vitamins and minerals that often show up with these conditions. It’s not an exhaustive list but hopefully it gives you an idea of what to look for. Please note, I am not recommending you take all of them, but do some research yourself and have a think about which elements you feel would be appropriate. Also please do check with a health practitioner if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking medication.

Want to know what could help you? Kinesiology can help you with nutritional testing, assessing your body and identifying areas  that could do with some support. If you would like to have your vitamin and mineral levels checked with Kinesiology testing, do get in touch.

Prepare meals and snacks to keep you on track

What a Sunday! Food preparation is key to keeping your nutrition goals on track. Whip up sugar free snacks to always have them on hand when hungry strikes

Sunday saw me spend some of the afternoon on food prep to keep me going for the next few weeks. Gluten and dairy free breakfast, dinner, morning and afternoon snacks all prepared to keep me away from the temptations of bad food!

*Salmon, white and mackerel fish cakes made with goats cheese & butter
* Flaxseed crackers (scrummy with cashew nur butter and avocado on top)
* Deliciously Ella’s cinnamon and pecan granola
* Sugar free cocoa and berry antioxidant bars
(my new favourite)

Preparation is the key to success. When you feel hungry, you reach out for a snack irregarless of what it may be – muffin, biscuit, crisps. If you want to help fuel your body with nutritious food, you’ll need to prepare. I spent a while preparing the above so I had plenty for this week plus a stash of fishcakes and antiocidant bars in the freezer for later. Provided you store the granola in an airight container, it can last for a month.

Comment below if you’d like any recipes. Fail to prepapre, prepare to fail so go forth and sort your good snacks out!

ECZEMA HELP

My 6 year old nephew who suffers from eczema was staying with us this weekend and, me being me, I was chatting to his Mum about how to help. We had already identified a lactose and wheat intolerance using kinesiology testing and this had really helped clear it up. However, they found this change hard to stick to so we discussed how to make life easier just by swapping his milk, bread and cereal to gluten free. It’s about removing the triggers for a short period of time to allow the inflammatory markers to reduce whilst we support the body’s natural immune system. Sounds a bit tricky but it’s quite simple and I can help you with this. (I’m not a massive fan of gluten free replacements long term as they are often high in sugar and starchy ingredients but if it helps a 6 year old reduce his itchy and sore eczema then I’m all for quick wins).

My lovely nephew doesn’t like the thick, gloopy prescription cream and squirms his way out of your arms if you’re trying to apply it but – bribed with an Easter egg – he agreed to let us play ‘The Arms and Leg Game’, essentially trying different creams with my NYR Organic lotions suitable for eczema, certified by the Soil Association. We put Stellaria lotion on his legs and Calendular lotion on his arms. He loved the feel of the Stellaria and was quite happy to have it on at night and it stopped him itching, what a result! 🙂

No chat with me is complete without discussing what goodness to put INTO the body (it’s not all about cutting things out), so we tried the Organic Berry powder as a healthy Ribena and discussed adding in the omega 3,6&9 NYRO oil into his morning smoothie (another new idea) to help boost the immune system with vitamin C and essential fatty acids to help his skin. I can’t wait to hear how he gets on 🙂

Only £7 a tube, Stellaria & Calendula creams test up really well and are incredibly soothing. If anyone wants to try them, let me know and I can send you a sample.
